Susanne Ludwig, Grandmother’s cellar

Susanne Ludwig is a German artist who looks at themes around memory, childhood, space and discarded objects. This series entitled ‘Grandmother’s cellar’ are photographs taken of her own grandmothers collections of objects. I particularly like her use of light to focus in on uninhabited clothing, the hat and the hanging clothes conjure up the feeling that the owner is both absent and present in the objects she has preserved. The full series of photographs are available on her website.

In 1961 Janina Szewczuk changed the surname of her family to Sims by deed poll, as it was easier to pronounce for the children in the school where she worked. She spent the rest of her life in England, never returning to Poland after the war.
